Rush Limbaugh recently made a point to remind everyone of the true impact and power of radio, quoting a Washington Times article from this past April that highlighted new findings from Nielsen. In a half-hour audio clip you can find below, the pioneer of AM radio shared why he prefers radio to TV, compelling stats from Nielsen’s second-quarter 2017 Comparable Metrics Report, and a healthy dose of Rush political talk on listenership and stories from around the nation.
Here are just a handful of quotes from Rush Limbaugh (and one from Nielsen Audio) on why AM/FM radio is still the king when it comes to media.
“You Can’t Do This On TV!”
Simply put, good radio grabs the listener in ways TV can’t. A compelling radio host or program can build connections and paint an influential picture in the theatre of the mind. Rush described the unscripted nature of his show (and the ability to edit rather than plan) a large part of what keeps him loyal to radio and hesitant to pursue TV opportunities.
“It’s the essence of improv — you simply cannot do what I’m doing right now on TV… A good radio program with a compelling host will [encourage active listening]. You will not want to NOT pay attention.”
“The Audience Here is Much Larger Than On Cable.”
Kicking of what he called “shocking news,” Rush discussed radio’s unbeatable reach and shared some highlights from the aforementioned Nielsen report, as analyzed by the Washington Times. According to Nielsen, old school AM/FM radio is still the most popular media of all in the United States, reaching 93% of U.S. adults or 243 million listeners each week. That’s more than those watching TV or using a smartphone or TV-connected device, and expanding delivery options like apps and podcasts contribute to radio’s continued reign over reach.
“It’s the Blue Blazer of the Media Universe.”
This quote comes from Managing Director of Nielsen Audio, Brad Kelly, in a comparison of technology to fashion:
“Technology trends are a bit like fashion trends. They come and go, oftentimes long forgotten after the craze ends. But there’s one notable exception to the technology/fashion trend rule in the media world — broadcast radio. AM/FM radio is the blue blazer of the media universe. Who would have believed 100 years after its debut, AM/FM radio would continue to top the charts as the medium that reaches more consumers each week than any other?”
“There Are No Boundaries…”
Rush describes how radio crosses the generational divide, appealing to Boomers and Gen X as well as 95% of the Millennial population that listens to radio every week. And beyond age, radio transcends other demographics and beliefs — as Rush put it, “There’s no boundaries. There’s no religion. Everybody is out there, and good radio is much more personal and much more intimate than television.”
